Those of Norway are among the most beautiful and longest in the world.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During my recent <strong>self-drive trip through Norway <\/strong>(July 2019) I was lucky enough to see some of the <strong>most spectacular Norwegian fjords:<\/strong> the<strong> N\u00e6r\u00f8yfjord<\/strong> and the <strong>Aurlandsfjord<\/strong> \u2013 which are two arms of the Sognefjord \u2013 and the <strong>Hardangerfjord<\/strong>. All three are located in <strong>south-western Norwa<\/strong>y.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-very-light-gray-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\">The Naer\u00f8fjord is <em>the narrowest fjord in the world<\/em> and is the most impressive arm of the Sognefjord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/embed?mid=1zZ5GiQL3ryGfO2XB4nsp7TwErsBq8Zuf\" width=\"100%\" height=\"480\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Norwegian fjords: where they are.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>But where are the most beautiful Norwegian fjords and how to visit them? <\/strong>The Norwegian fjords are essentially divided into two areas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>fjords of the South of the country, North of Bergen: <strong>Sognefjord<\/strong> and <strong>Geirangerfjord<\/strong>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>fjords of the South of the country, South of Bergen: <strong>Lysefiord <\/strong>ed <strong>Hardangerfjord<\/strong>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Arctic fjords, located in the far north of the country, among which the most famous is the<strong> Trollfjord,<\/strong> in the Tr\u00f8mso and the Lofoten islands region.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Which fjords to visit during a trip to Norway?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-very-light-gray-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\">Due to the large size of the country, it is impossbile to see all most beautiful fjords from north to south staying only 1 or 2 weeks, given that you probably will visit the most interesting norwegian towns too (Oslo, Bergen). Some of the most suggestive itineraries are made by different means, for example: train + boat, or car+boat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-very-light-gray-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Some fjords, even in the farthest points from the coast, are very deep and it is for this reason that it is possible to navigate them even with big ships, which allow you to observe them from close.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fjords can therefore be seen in these ways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>driving independently along the beautiful scenic roads<\/strong>, also reported on <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"this Norwegian site (apre in una nuova scheda)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasjonaleturistveger.no\/en\" target=\"_blank\">this Norwegian site<\/a>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>participating in a <strong>one-day cruise<\/strong>, for example starting from Bergen;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>participating in a one-day tour from Oslo or Bergen, like <em>\u201cNorway in a Nutshell\u201d;<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>taking part in a <strong>multi-day cruise <\/strong>on board the <strong>Hurtigruten ship<\/strong>, the former fjord postal ship that sails along the entire Norwegian coast from Bergen to Tr\u00f8mso;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>using a <strong>ferry line<\/strong> on which to embark your car, in order to continue with your self-drive itinerary once disembarked;  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>in many locations you can <strong>rent kayaks <\/strong>or<strong> small motor boats<\/strong> to observe the fjords as closely as possible<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-very-light-gray-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I suggest you \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Norwegian southwestern fjords by car: the Hardangerfjord.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was the first of the two fjords that we visited during our Norway trip, It stretches right along the scenic route that we followed by car, moving from<strong> Oslo <\/strong>(where we landed) to <strong>Bergen<\/strong> (where we stayed for two days).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The beauty of the <strong>Hardangerfjord <\/strong>lies in the fact that having a rather mild microclimate it is a <strong>very green fjord<\/strong>, with many <strong>fruit trees<\/strong> cultivations and <strong>spectacular waterfalls.<\/strong> <strong>The best time to see this scenery is obviously in summer \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Steindalsfossen<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>scenic fjord road<\/strong> \u2013 divided into three stages \u2013 goes <strong>from Granvin to L\u00e5tefoss<\/strong>. We only took the first stage (from Granvin to Steindalsfossen), admiring two beautiful waterfalls near which you can stop comfortably by car. The first was <strong>Skjervsfossen<\/strong> and the second <strong>Steindalsfossen<\/strong>, which has the peculiarity of having a <strong>walkway on the rear of the stream of the waterfall.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of the most beautiful stretches of the Hardangerfjord can be also found on the smaller arms branches: first the <strong>Eidfjord<\/strong> one, with its village that bears the same name. From here you can <a aria-label=\"rent kayaks or board small motor  (apre in una nuova scheda)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.it\/eidfjord-l98085\/eidfjord-classico-tour-guidato-in-kayak-del-fiordo-di-3-ore-t217728\/?partner_id=E0E07CJ&utm_medium=online_publisher&placement=content-middle&cmp=Fiords-kayak\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rent kayaks or b<\/a>oard small motor boats to discover the fjord from very close. of Kaupanger, sailing in front of the imposing mountains of the <strong>natural reserve of Bleia.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Characteristic villages not to be missed in this area of the Sognefjord:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><em>Aurland:<\/em><\/strong> located right on the intersection of the arms of the three fjords, spectacular views.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Fl\u00e5m:<\/em><\/strong> located at the bottom of the Aurlandsfjord, from here you can take the Fl\u00e5msbana, a railway line that runs through a picturesque valley.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Gudvangen: <\/em><\/strong>village from which the cruises on the <strong>N\u00e6r\u00f8yfjord<\/strong> departs, in summer there is a small (and touristic) <em>\u201cViking village\u201d<\/em>. The view is so beautiful in this narrow valley, even without getting on a cruise ship.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Useful booking information:<\/strong> this cruise takes place in spring, summer and autumn. Having the embark our car on the ferry as well, I booked in advance <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fjordtours.com\/things-to-do-in-norway\/car-ferries\/kaupanger-gudvangen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">on this site<\/a>, so as to secure the place on board. On board there is a small caf\u00e9 that provides hot beverages and snacks. We started with the cruise at 9 o\u2019clock in the morning, to have time to make a different itinerary on the way back by car. In hindsight, however, <strong>perhaps the best time to take this cruise is at noon, <\/strong>when the sun is high in the sky and lights the whole fjord. Please note <strong>the car ferry only runs from June to September, 2 times a day.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-very-light-gray-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>NON TRAVELING BY CAR?<\/strong> you cam embark yourself in <strong>Bergen<\/strong> on a full-day cruise that arrives at the <strong>Fl\u00e5m village,<\/strong> in the <strong>Aurlandsfjord<\/strong>. (apre in una nuova scheda)\" href=\"https:\/\/gofjords.com\/norway-tours\/fjord-cruise-bergen-flaam\" target=\"_blank\">gofjords.com<\/a> site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">General information and FAQ about Norway and the fjords.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>What is the better time of the year to see norway fjords<\/em>?<\/strong> In my opinion the <strong>best time of the year to visit is during summer<\/strong> (June-August), for many good reasons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>you can benefit from <strong>many hours of daylight<\/strong> (in July it is day from 4:30 AM until 11 PM);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>temperatures are mild <\/strong>(average of 18 degrees day)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>you will also be able to skip the eventuality closing of the roads for snow and frost, as happens in winter<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>summer also allows you to see <strong>the waterfalls, lakes and rivers in full flow<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>not all cruises are possible in winter<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>What about renting a car in Norway?<\/em><\/strong> Driving is on the right side, and roads are often small with low speed limits. To rent a car I always use <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Autoeurope (apre in una nuova scheda)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tkqlhce.com\/3q122gv30v2IQOQRMSKIKLMSQNPN\" target=\"_blank\">Autoeurope<\/a>  or Rentalcars to find the best deal. We rented in Oslo at the Gardermoen airport and kept the car for the entire one-week itinerary. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>Can I see the fjords from Oslo without renting a car?<\/strong><\/em> yes, there are 1-day organized tours called <em>\u201cNorway in a Nutshell\u201d<\/em>, which will take you through a scenic train ride through the mountains, and then to the village of Fl\u00e5m where you will embark on a 2-hours cruise on the Aurlands- and N\u00e6r\u00f8yfjord. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-very-light-gray-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>IMPORTANT! Be aware that renting a car in a location and returning it to another one, in Norway can be very expensive.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Is Norway expensive to visit?<\/em><\/strong> Yes it is, compared to other european nations, Norway is the most expensive.
