Does the sargassum problem persist?<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I just came back from a Yucatan and Riviera Maya trip and this is my report about the situation I found in early December 2018, about the sargassum on the beaches.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But first let\u2019s try to <strong>understand what this sargassum<\/strong> phenomenon consists of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #3399cc;\">What is sargassum?<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Sargassum is an oceanic brown seaweed that normally floats brought by the currents. It is also the natural habitat for a number of marine creatures.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So,<strong> what\u2019s the problem?<\/strong> The problem is that, since 2011 to the present, the phenomenon has grown enormously, causing unprecedented difficulties in the <strong>Gulf of Mexico coastal areas<\/strong> and many <strong>Caribbean islands<\/strong>, <strong>especially in the summer months.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The increased proliferation of this algae seems to depend on two factors:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>rising sea temperatures<\/strong> (global warming);<\/li><li><strong>pollution<\/strong> caused by <strong>agricultural fertilisers<\/strong> dumped into the sea, which tend to fertilise these algae and make them grow even more.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #3399cc;\">What kind of problems can sargassum cause to humans and animals?<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Health issues.<\/strong> When sargassum arrives on the coast it settles and begins to rot, emitting toxic substances, which can be irritating to the breathing apparatus. For example, on the hotel beach where we stayed in <strong>Playa del Carmen <\/strong>a staff of 3 people daily raked, cleaned and tried to create an embankment with sandbags. A <strong>huge job<\/strong>, a kind of struggle against windmills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-2 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex or where the beaches are left natural, nothing is done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The good news: beautiful and almost clean beaches on the Mayan Riviera<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, we found some (almost) clean beaches too on the Riviera Maya, here they are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Akumal beach<\/strong> (turtle beach): clean and with almost crystal clear water. I <strong>snorkeled with three turtles<\/strong>, even without going beyond the buoys, that means very close to the shore. It was a great joy! If you want to stay here, on this beach you will find different kinds of accomodation, like the expensive <a title=\"Secrets Akumal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unadonnaconlavaligia.com\/en\/consiglia\/hotel\/secrets-akumal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Secrets Akumal<\/a> hotel, where even just renting an umbrella and two sunbeds costs 140 euros per day (we asked!!). Or \u2013 in the same excellent location on the beach \u2013 you can stay at the most affordable <a title=\"Akumal Caribe.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unadonnaconlavaligia.com\/en\/consiglia\/hotel\/akumal-caribe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Akumal Caribe<\/a> hotel.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div <\/strong><\/span><\/span><span id=\"s2_1\">beautiful free (not private by an hotel) beach, accessible from the Tulum-Cancun main road paying a small fee to pass by car: It had few buildings and almost <strong>zero sargassum<\/strong>.<\/span> <span id=\"s2_2\">If I were to return to the Riviera Maya, <strong>I would certainly look for accommodation on this wonderful beach<\/strong>, such as at the <a title=\"Catalonia Royal Tulum\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unadonnaconlavaligia.com\/en\/consiglia\/hotel\/catalonia-royal-tulum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Catalonia Royal Tulum<\/a> resort or at the <a href=\"http:\/\/tidd.ly\/356f7203\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Esencia<\/strong><\/a>, a luxury hotel in traditional colonial style, judged <strong>one of the best 25 hotels in the world<\/strong> by the magazine Cond\u00e8 Nast Traveler.<\/span><strong><br \/><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-full wp-image-15244\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1140\" height=\"731\" Maya.<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We had a lot of fun during this trip, we drove around with our car, bathed in the <strong>beautiful cenotes<\/strong> (which are a great alternative to the sea) and visited <strong>mayan ruines<\/strong>.
