Let me to introduce you “La Terrazza con l’Ulivo”, my new guesthouse in La Spezia

Dear readers, I have great news!

I just opened my new business in tourist accommodation, here in my private owned house in Cadimare, La Spezia. It is the “La Terrazza con l’Ulivo” guesthouse, the meaning of the name is: the terrace with an olive tree, because there is a flower bed with an olive tree in the center of the terrace. This olive tree is also the symbol of our house itself.

For many years since now, since we bought this abandoned cottage on the hills of La Spezia in 2015 and started renovating it, this has become my dream: create a place to accomodate guests in my home. Now the dream has come true and we can offer one guest room with private bathroom and a private terrace entirely for guests’s use.

Where is the guesthouse “La Terrazza con l’Ulivo” located?

We are in the Eastern ligurian Riviera located, in the socalled “Gulf of Poets“, which is the Gulf of the town of La Spezia, on the hills of the seaside village of Cadimare in La Spezia, that borders the town of Portovenere, 17 km away from the Cinque Terre (Riomaggiore village), and 8 km from Portovenere. Town center and train station of La Spezia are 6 km away, they are reachable with the bus which stops 10 minutes by foot from the house.

The house – a stone cottage in traditional Ligurian style – is located on a terraced ground on the first hills of the city. Upstairs there is the apartment where we live, and on the ground floor there is the brand new accommodation for guests. It is an optimal solution that allows both us and our guests to have their own privacy.

How is the accommodation?

Room is for 2 people, we planned it for indipendent travellers who love to enjoy a nice place to stay and not just to “have a place to sleep”. The spacious terrace invites you to relax with a drink while you enjoy the view, which ranges from the hills of the Regional Park of Portovenere, the Gulf of La Spezia, the village of Fezzano and the Apuan Alps. On clear days, you can also see the tuscan Versilia’s coastline in the distance.

Interiors are in modern rustic style, with exposed beams and a linear and fresh furniture, all made of wood by our trusted carpenter. The bathroom is within the bedroom, and has a large shower. Wifi and air conditioning are available.

We do not provide breakfast, but you can prepare it yourself thanks to the breakfast corner equipped with a fridge, a kettle, a Bialetti espresso coffee machine and a toaster, and enjoy it on the terrace, which is equipped with table and chairs, sunbed and umbrella. Otherwise, you can always get off at Cadimare village where you can find two bars and two very good restaurants.

If you are travelling with your own car, parking is free and always availbale on the public road in front of the house.

What to do in the Gulf of Poets, how many days?

If you want to explore the Gulf area and also visit also the nearby Cinque Terre, at least 4/5 nights are necessary. This could be an idea:

  • one day to visit Portovenere and the Palmaria island, in summer the ferry departs directly from the pier of Cadimare, it’s a comfortable and pleasant trip that lasts 45 minutes. The ferry stops also at Le Grazie and Fezzano, two quiet seaside villages that I recommend to visit.
  • another day to visit the beautiful Lerici and Tellaro, with the beautiful sandy beaches of Fiascherino and Baia Blu, and the castle
  • one day to visit the Cinque Terre
  • if during summer, you could spend another day relaxing on the beach in Bonassola or Levanto, which have large beaches

If you also like to venture inland, there are many medieval villages and castles to visit, from the nearest Arcola and Vezzano Ligure, to those of Lunigiana and Tuscany as Fosdinovo. Even the Apuan Alps are no more than 1 hour away by car, where you can visit the village of Colonnata or a marble quarry. How about a day on the beaches of Versilia? or visit Pisa? from our house all this interesting places are no more than 1 hour drive far away.

Which time of the year is the best to visit the Gulf of Poets?

You can visit any time of the year, remembering that:

  • Summer is really crowded and hot
  • Spring can be sometimes rainy and late Autumn too

The most enjoyable time of the year, in my opinion, is end of Summer/ early Autumn (that means end of August -September and October), when the weather is no more hot, the area is less crowded than during Summer, and the sea water temperature is still agreable for swimming. Of course you can visit during Winter too, especially December can be a very good time with sunny days and mild temperatures.
