During my trip to New Caledonia, December 2011, I visited the marvelous Isle of Pines, surely one of the most magic places where I have ever been.
On this small island, the most southern of the archipelago, you can find one of thhe few 5 stars hotel of the whole New Caledonia, a luxurious Meridien resort, situated in one of the most magic places of the island, the Oro bay. Spending a night here can be very expensive!
I don’t know if this hotel is worth the money or not, because I did not sleep there.. but
I can assure you that the magic of this island can not be found inside hotels.
Where to sleep on the Ile de Pines New Caledonia
So where to sleep on the island? On Isle of Pines there is a good choice of accomodations (which is not so predictable in whole New Caledonia), therefore there is no reason to spend a fortune staying at 5* star hotel. An intermediary category hotel could be the Oure Tera, nestled in the magnificient Kanumera bay. It seems very nice, and the location is fantastic. Anyway I don’t even recommend you this one.
I recommend you to sleep at the Nataiwatch guesthouse, where we stayed 3 nights; the rooms are basic but the service is good, and the location is magic. This guesthouse has been the first on the island, and it is managed and owned by the same family since many years. For your stay you can choose among camping, traditional house and more modern bungalow in cement (some also with kitchenette).
We slept in one of these last ones, because they were the only accomodations with private bathroom, up to 3 persons, with breakfast included in the price.
The guesthouse is well organized. They will pick you up at the airport, 10 minutes by car away from the structure, they offer bicycles and cars for rent, and different types of excursions. There is a very simple restaurant where guests can have their meals, with simple plastic furnitures and wooden benches; guests can enjoy inside the breakfast, and outside the lunch and dinner. It’s necessary to book in advance every meal, for example, after having breakfast you can say if you want to have dinner too on the same day.
All lodgings are distributed in a beautiful shady park, there is a lot of calm and peace. The bungalows are equipped with an ipad and free wifi is available. The room is also furnished with a small refrigerator and fans (no air conditioning); the external wooden porch is perfect for relax.
You can reach the stunning Kanumera bay with a short 5-minutes walk through the tropical forest; there is a very beautiful path. First time I arrived here it was a kind of magic… I couldn’t believe the beauty of this scenery!
How to book the guesthouse
Wanna booking? go to their official website, and write an email (in French). To confirm your booking, they will ask you only about your flight number, no deposit is needed.
If you don’t speak French and you feel more comfortable booking through a travel agency, I suggest you to book through like Pacifique Lagon which is based in Noumea.
And now.. enjoy the photogallery!
P.S: the minimum rate for the bungalow with private bathroom and breakfast is around 90 Euros per night for 2 people: surely one of the best prices you can find at the island.
